About This Letterbox

Thomas Edison is often credited with inventing the light bulb. However, in actuality he just improved upon existing patents. Mr. Edison ended up selling a whole bunch of light bulbs, though, because he set up a system of power distribution, making home use of light bulbs practical and affordable.

West Orange Light Bulbs

West Orange, New Jersey is the site of the laboratory and home of Thomas Edison. And as of this writing, West Orange is adorned with 20 giant decorated light bulbs. It is now also the home of a little, lovingly hand-carved light bulb stamp - and it's up to you to find it!

You can see others who have found it here.

Getting There

In New Jersey, take Route 280 to Exit 7/Pleasant Valley Way. Turn left (south) onto Pleasant Valley Way. Turn left onto Northfield Avenue. Pass the Turtle Back Zoo on the right, go part way up the hill and turn right (at a traffic light) onto Walker Road (across from Japanese restaurant Ekko). Turtle Back Rock is a short ways up Walker on the right.

Clues

Ancient Inscription

Go to Turtle Back Park, and park in the lot that is farthest from the road. There is a gravel road with a field on the left and picnic tables on the right. Walk down this road and follow it into the forest.

Follow the wide trail for a while. Not too long, maybe like five or ten minutes or so.You will come to a fork in the trail, and it is marked by a white stone, about the size of a bread box. Take the lesser used path that goes to the right.

Pay attention! Not long after you pass the white stone, the trail you are on will be crossed by a narrow path, blazed with faded orange tags on the trees. You need to follow this little path to the right.

From this juncture, follow the orange blaze path for approximately 43 paces (not steps - paces!). Look for an inscription that looks like what you see here. Face the inscription. Go ahead, get up nice and close. Take a good look.

Now, with the inscription at 12 o'clock, turn to the 4 o'clock position and notice on the other side of the path two fallen trees. Go to the point where the two trees meet. Your prize is hidden behind some small rocks and leaves inside one of the fallen tree trunks.

I took pictures of all the lightbulbs on this page, but I take no credit for making them look pretty. Click here for more information about West Orange's Great Light Way.
